Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting a competitive multiplayer fighting game from Maximum Entertainment and Paramount Consumer Products.
As reported by Gematsu, Maximum Entertainment announced it had entered a partnership with Paramount during its 2024 roadmap, revealing an open beta would be released in 2025.
"We are thrilled to announced that we have entered into a partnership with Paramount Consumer Products to develop a competitive multiplayer fighting game set in Avatar: The Last Airbender universe," said CEO Christina Seelye. "This competitive fighting game is set to release into early access in 2025. We are thrilled to be bringing this project to life and we will have so much more to share on this game in the future."
Avatar: The Last Airbender, despite being one of the most beloved animated shows on the planet and having several successful novel and comic adaptations, hasn't had a particularly successful run of video games.
Fans were hopeful for 2023's Quest for Balance, which arrived just as Avatar: The Last Airbender was growing in relevance again through the Netflix adaptation and a wave of new animated projects. It launched to negative reviews, however, earning just a 4/10 from IGN. "Avatar: The Last Airbender - Quest for Balance is a mess, with clunky combat, way too many pointless puzzles, and baffling choices for which scenes from the series to highlight," we said.
A game based on sequel series The Legend of Korra was the last to release before it way back in 2014, but it too received a 4/10 from IGN. "What a disappointment," we said. "Even with a reputable developer behind it, The Legend of Korra game left us bent out of shape."
