Mortal Kombat has long been one of the most popular fighting game franchises, as well as one of the most violent. This nature made it particularly controversial in the '90s, with ports to home consoles downplaying some of the gore. That wasn't the case on the Sega Genesis, making it the home of the definitive Mortal Kombat port. Even with this arcade accuracy, Mortal Kombat wasn't nearly the best fighting game on the system.
