The Rising of the Shield Hero has always been a gritty, action-oriented isekai anime, and it sports character designs to match. The series does have a few truly lovable, wholesome heroes like Raphtalia the tanuki girl and Melty the young princess, but most of the anime's heroes are distinctly flawed. In fact, this best describes the Bow (Itsuki), Sword (Ren), and Spear (Motoyasu) Heroes — collectively referred to as the Cardinal Heroes — who have been antiheroes at their best and Naofumi Iwatani's enemies at their worst.
