The reboot of The Crow isn’t going to be your usual superhero film. During an interview with Deadline, producer Sam Pressman said it’s not what comic book movie fans might expect.
“We’re finally at a point where we can really explore those other avenues because it’s such a unique property in that it is not a studio film, it’s not a Marvel film – it’s kind of an anti-Marvel film,” he said. “I have the highest hopes for that and I really love what Molly Hassell has done in pushing it up the hill and Rupert Sanders is such a visionary.”
The Crow will star Bill Skarsgard and is being helmed by Ghost in the Shell director Rupert Sanders. However, this is just the latest iteration of the reboot. An updated version of The Crow has been in the works for a long time, with various projects greenlit and subsequently abandoned. The Crow, which starred the late Brandon Lee, originally debuted in 1994, and a sequel was released in 1996 followed by two straight-to-DVD sequels in 2000 and 2005.
Since then, we’ve seen Blade director Stephen Norrington attached to the reboot before it ultimately fell apart. The Nun director Corrin Hardy also signed-on with Jason Momoa set to star until both left the project.
Still, it looks as though this latest incarnation is building up steam, and while the reboot may have been in the works for some time, the studio is keen to capitalise on it. To that end, it sounds as though they’re exploring opportunities in other media.
“The Crow has been a very central and integral part of our company and I’m really proud of the progress and the work that has been done,” said Pressman. “I think the movie is just going to blow people away. Our partners want to approach it in a very 360 way, whether it be video games, an animated series, or a universe, but it’s got this cosmic legacy that can expand beyond a singular story.”
