J. R. R. Tolkien rarely provided detailed physical descriptions of the weapons and armor used in The Lord of the Rings. He was more concerned with recounting the stories behind such items or with explaining their magical properties, such as Sting's ability to detect the presence of Orcs. When Peter Jackson created his trilogy of film adaptations, it therefore fell to Wētā Workshop to craft unique designs for the cultures of Middle-earth. This was a tall order, as the artists had to create equipment that was simultaneously believable, visually appealing and consistent with the overall aesthetic of The Lord of the Rings.
