D&D’s next Magic crossover isn’t cards, it’s a TTRPG setting

Wizards of the Coast is crossing the streams again, mixing its popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering with the iconic rules of Dungeons & Dragons. The result will be a “crossover supplement” focused on the mysterious plane known as both Lorwyn and Shadowmoor. The announcement was made during MagicCon Chicago, which Wizards says was the franchise’s biggest ever in-person fan-focused franchise event. No further details, or even a release window, were shared in the official news release — but we did get a lovely piece of art from Jesper Ejsing.

Lorwyn and Shadowmoor are two names for the same location, a plane of existence that rotates back and forth between its two aspects once every 300 years. According to the official lore entry on the Magic website, Lorwyn “is an idyllic world where races of fable thrive in perpetual midsummer” — think elves and minor characters from The Bard’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and you’re in the right ballpark. Shadowmoor, on the other hand “exists in perpetual gloom, its citizen bitterly transformed and locked in a desperate battle for survival.” So, to stick with our analogy, that’s when both Oberon’s and Titania’s eyes roll back in their head, they start foaming at the mouth, and then do battle for three centuries. Not great if you’re Puck, honestly.

There have been high-profile crossovers between D&D and Magic in the recent past, most notably the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms set and the Battle for Baldur’s Gate Commander decks. Those were sets of Magic cards based on D&D characters, monsters, locations, and lore. But the partnership has actually gone the other way around much more frequently with a long-running series of setting and campaign books, some of which were released completely free of charge.

What other planes has D&D visited? In 2021, Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos brought some thirsty co-eds together to sling spells at each other in a campaign that spanned an entire four-year collegiate career. In 2020 we got Mythic Odysseys of Theros, which was a setting book with plenty of Greco-Roman flair, and before that in 2018 we had Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica, yet another physical book based on a Magic set. But there was also a series called Plane Shift, written by Wizard’s current principal game designer for Dungeons & Dragons, James Wyatt, which released as free downloads. The ones we’re aware of include Plane Shift: Zendikar, Plane Shift: Innistrad, Plane Shift: Amonkhet, Plane Shift: Kaladesh and Plane Shift: Ixalan. Looks like Wyatt is involved here as well, as he took part in the presentation live on the floor at MagicCon.

The most recent book for 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons, Monster Manual (2025), is available widely now.
