The first Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga trailer is here, revealing Anya-Taylor Joy as a younger version of Charlize Theron's wasteland heroine, as well as familiar figures like Immortan Joe. Chris Hemsworth is there too, continuing Mad Max's tradition of using Australian actors, and he's looking pretty wild in his role as Dementus.
Revealed during CCXP, the new Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga trailer offers our first glimpse of the anticipated sequel to 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. It will detail the journey of Furiosa, the heroine of Fury Road, and the quest that led her to enact her daring plot, and will reportedly be structured very differently from the previous movie. George Miller returns to the director's chair for the new film and co-wrote the script alongside Nico Lathouris.

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
Furiosa will attempt to build on the world of Mad Max, which has been one of the foundational post-apocalyptic franchises since its debut more than 30 years ago. Fury Road was hailed for his astonishing stunts and practical effects at the time of its release, leading moviegoers and studios alike to reconsider the outsized role of CGI in action movies.
We wrote of Fury Road at the time of its release, "The over-the-top stunts and eccentric characters and designs are all hugely important to Fury Road, as are the troubled figures like Max himself and Furiosa, but it’s the overriding sense of the film’s uniqueness, its striving to be something more than just another action movie, that is most impressive. Mad Max: Fury Road is a one of a kind. Like the world it creates, it is a thing of beautiful brutality."
Details of Furiosa began to emerge in 2020, with Theron calling the decision to recast Furiosa "hearthbreaking." Taylor-Joy later said that she was "really excited" to take on the role and that she was "already dreaming of her." Hemsworth, meanwhile, is playing "totally against type" as the main villain in Furiosa, and his intense performance is already apparent in the trailer.
In addition to the trailer, various items were on display at CCXP, including a gold statue of Taylor-Joy as Furiosa. It was part of a panel in which the cast and crew revealed additional details about the prequel, which is due for release on May 24, 2024 after being delayed.
