Sony has provided a sales update for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, confirming more than five million copies sold after just 11 days on sale.
Developer Insomniac trumpeted Spider-Man 2’s sales success, saying in a post on X/Twitter: "Woo! We're incredibly honoured to announce Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PS5 has sold over five million copies! Thank you to our incredible community for supporting us and helping us reach this milestone!"
Sony said previously Spider-Man 2 was the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game over a 24-hour period when it sold more than 2.5 million copies in a day. That sales milestone put Spider-Man 2 ahead of Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Ragnarok at the top of the PlayStation day-one launch sales chart.
But how does it fare now? God of War Ragnarok sold 5.1 million copies in its debut week, which means outside of the initial 24-hour period, Ragnarok remains top dog. God of War Ragnarok launched in November 2022 on PlayStation 4 as well as PS5, however, and it’s worth noting Spider-Man 2 is a PS5 exclusive and therefore sold into a smaller install base than Ragnarok.
For added context, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2 sold more than four million copies in its first three days on sale, making it the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever. Before that, Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game sold 3.3 million copies in the same three-day time period.
Whatever the case, Spider-Man 2 is a clear critical and commercial success. If you're playing, check out our list of the Spider-Man 2's Best Skills to Get First as well as all of the Spider-Man 2 suits in the game.
We wrote in our Spider-Man 2 review: "As a sequel in a spectacular series, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is both blessed and cursed... Insomniac refines a successful formula of combat and web-swinging without revolutionising either in major ways, making them comfy and familiar with just enough new tweaks and abilities to elevate them to fun new heights. The part that feels like it actually needed a radical rethinking is the open world of New York City, which has been made bigger but not better, with an exhausting checklist of mostly repetitious side activities."
Thoughts now turn to where Insomniac takes its Spider-Man series next. We know it's already working on a Wolverine game set within the same universe, and has suggested it's open to a Venom spinoff too. There are also suggestions some sort of Daredevil or Doctor Strange DLC could be in the works, and of course the inevitable Spider-Man 3 is coming down the line.
