The actor who played Varys in Game of Thrones has spoken out on the show's "rushed" final two seasons and said he felt "inconsolable" about them.

Speaking to The Times, Conleth Hill explained he had no issues with the show until its controversial seventh and eight seasons, when writers at HBO surpassed the source material provided by George R.R. Martin.

"I thought I'd done something wrong," Hill said of his character changes in the final two seasons. "Right up until the last two series, I had no complaints at all.

"I just felt frustrated with the last couple of series because Varys wasn't the all-knowing character he had been. I think the writers wanted to do one thing to end it and the studio HBO wanted to do another. I felt that last series was a bit rushed. I was inconsolable, but now I'm fine about it."

Game of Thrones arguably became the biggest TV show of the 2010s but received criticism for Season 7 and Season 8 in particular. Both seasons were shortened from the regular ten episode runs with acts being sped up compared to earlier episodes. In what's now become an infamous example, journeys from one end of the world to the other that took several episodes or seasons earlier on took literal moments in Season 8.

Hill previously said he loved his entire ten year run on Game of Thrones but was "absolutely gutted to get so close and not make the end".

Many fans didn't have such a positive experience though, as over one million people signed a petition to have HBO remake Season 8.
