Publisher Dark Horse is giving the deluxe treatment to Lone Wolf & Cub, the landmark manga series from writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima, with a series of re-releases slated to launch starting this year. The new oversized hardcover editions will feature the manga’s epic story in its original right-to-left reading format, with Japanese-language sound effects.
Lone Wolf & Cub Deluxe Edition vol. 1 arrives in December 2025, and will collect stories from the Dark Horse paperback collections of Lone Wolf and Cub vol. 1 and 2, and stories from vol. 3. Lone Wolf and Cub Deluxe Edition vol. 2, coming in March 2026, features stories from Lone Wolf and Cub vol. 3, 4, and 5. Additional volumes of Deluxe Edition collections will follow, Dark Horse said in a news release.
Each announced edition will span 720 pages, and measure 7 inches by 10 inches. They cost $54.99 each. Dark Horse has been publishing Lone Wolf & Cub in various formats since 2000, starting with the 28-volume, smaller-sized (5 inches by 7 inches) trade paperback collections designed to mimic collected versions from Japan. Dark Horse also sells cheaper omnibus versions of the series.
Koike and Kojima’s Lone Wolf and Cub manga ran from 1970 to 1976. Lone Wolf & Cub tells the story of Ōgami Ittō, a disgraced shogun’s executioner, who travels with his son Daigorō as a masterless samurai, on a quest for vengeance across feudal Japan. Koike’s spartan prose and Kojima’s dynamic illustrations, paired with the influential trope of a strong father traveling with his vulnerable charge, has had a profound impact on comic book creators and other media — it was a key influence on Star Wars’ The Mandalorian, for example.
Lone Wolf & Cub has spawned multiple live-action movie adaptations, as well as sequels and spinoff manga series, but the original manga series is a seminal work. The new Deluxe Editions look like they may be the best versions released to date.
