There's officially a 4K remaster of James Cameron's 1989 underwater adventure The Abyss, and it'll be in theaters for one day only next month.

Cameron made the announcement on Monday, saying that what he's calling "The Abyss: Special Edition" will be in theaters on December 6.

"If you haven't seen the film before, this is the way to experience it," he said in a video posted to X/Twitter. "And if you have, you'll be seeing the film I actually set out to make."

He also teased some "big surprises" not seen in the original version. We already knew that this special edition existed - he previously showed it off at Beyond Fest in September - but this is the first time it'll be available to a wider audience.

The original Abyss was released in 1989 and was heralded as one of the most ambitious movies of its time. It reflected Cameron's fascination with the ocean, which would subsequently be reflected in films like Titanic and Avatar: Way of the Water.

We ranked The Abyss at #7 in our list of James Cameron's movies, writing, "The Abyss might have been a long, sometimes plodding movie, even before the eventual director's cut, but it remains a quality genre picture with more going on than your average movie about alien visitors and those they visit."

Like so many of Cameron's films, it's apt to be a different experience in theaters. Now you'll get to judge for yourself when it arrives next month, with tickets going on sale on November 20. No word on a home release, but expect more info soon.
