Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé has won the domestic weekend box office by bringing in $21 million and holding off both Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Godzilla Minus One.
As reported by Comscore and Variety, Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé brought in another $6.4 million overseas to bring its global tally to $27.4 million.
Beyonce's concert film slightly beat expectations, but it didn't quite reach the heights of the openings of Michael Jackson: This Is It's $23.2 million, Justin Beiber: Never Say Never's $29.5 million, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert's $31.1 million, and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour's $92.9 million.
Despite that, it still became the first film in two decades to open with more than $20 million the weekend after Thanksgiving. Furthermore, Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé is being distributed by AMC Theaters and will see Beyoncé taking home about 50% of the box office earnings. This will be added to the impressive $579 million the Renaissance tour itself has reportedly already earned.
Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes took second place with $14.5 million and has now reached $121.2 million in North America. Globally, the Hunger Games prequel has brought its total to $243.9 million.
Godzilla Minus One was another newcomer to the box office this weekend and placed third with $11.0 million domestically. Worldwide, the latest Godzilla film has surpassed $34.6 million.
In our Godzilla Minus One review, we said, "A rousing, spectacle-filled blockbuster, Godzilla: Minus One takes the king of the monsters back to his roots in post-WWII Japan. The story is character-driven, but the monster scenes are exciting and effective."
Trolls Band Together took spot #4 with $7.6 million and Wish rounded out the top five with $7.4 million.
