Princess Peach may not have main character energy in wider pop culture, but since her first appearance, she's become a symbol for girl gamers everywhere. The pink princess is truly the first lady of gaming, getting playable appearances as early as the 80s, but she didn't headline a title of her own until 2005's Super Princess Peach. Over 18 years later, Nintendo is trying again to put her in the spotlight with Princess Peach: Showtime!, but why did it take so long? Why is it so important that Peach is finally the main protagonist again? The simplest answer to both questions is that while women are more likely to be okay consuming media more targeted at men, men historically aren't as likely to consume media aimed at women. Nintendo putting too much money in a "girly game" would've been a financial risk.
