Spider-Man: Reign (by Kaare Andrews, Jose Villarrubia, Chris Eliopoulos and Rus Wooton) is one of the wall-crawler’s most notorious miniseries. The four-issue story was created as Peter Parker’s equivalent to Batman’s Dark Knight Returns, but it’s not exactly held in the same regard. Instead, Reign is frequently criticized by fans as bleak, depressing, violent, terrifying, and far more macabre than usual stories revolving around the light-hearted hero. And while it’s true that visions of dead wives, rotting corpses piloted by robots, and paranoid anti-government undertones don’t make for the most endearing superhero story, they make for some pretty great horror.
