There are all sorts of subgenres within the horror category, but none are arguably as iconic or memorable as exorcism films. There's something inherently scary about a straight-up dogfight between God's righteous holy forces and the Devil's demonic army, regardless of whether a viewer has faith. Perhaps it feeds into humanity's fears of the unknown or their constant desire to know what's beyond the mortal coil. Either way, possessions and exorcisms are a definite mainstay in the genre. As a result, The Pope's Exorcist isn't the first movie to center its plot around the topic. However, the picture varies from its contemporaries by treating the main antagonist differently.
