Author Masashi Kishimoto's hit manga series Naruto launched back in 1999, and it quickly became a serious competitor for Eiichiro Oda's One Piece on the pages of Shonen Jump in Japan. A stellar anime for Naruto soon followed, and Naruto Shippuden after that. By now, shonen anime fans are used to Naruto being a pillar of the anime community and a proud member of the shonen "big three," but not everyone was there to watch it when Naruto was still new.
