Netflix reminded everyone that it was making a Magic: The Gathering animated series during its avalanche of Geeked Week Live 2024 announcements, showing off just a single image to give proof of life. Yes queen, give us nothing.
It's pure speculation - we've only got that title card to work with - but the bulky figure on the right has to be Planeswalker warrior Ajani Goldmane, while the glow in the hand of the smaller character could signify that it's pyromancer Chandra Nalaar.
It’s happening! Netflix’s MAGIC: THE GATHERING animated series is now in production from showrunner Terry Matalas in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast. #GeekedWeek pic.twitter.com/6502FcslqO

Originally announced as a Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Endgame ) project, Netflix has now given the reins to showrunner Terry Matalas who is taking "a new creative direction." Matalas might not have helmed massive Marvel movies, but he has been a writer and producer on popular shows like Star Trek: Picard and the 12 Monkeys TV adaptation.
There's plenty to work with in the Magic: The Gathering lore book, with the 1993 collectible card game spawning two video games, a serious competitive scene, a documentary about the competitive scene, over 50 novels, and even parody expansion sets.
Geeked Week Live 2024 was heavy on the gaming adaptations this year with more Arcane, Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, and a Splinter Cell show. See everything announced so far right here.
