As leaks and rumors around the Nintendo Switch successor continue to surface and people speculate on what the next console will be like, I want to briefly mention one wishlist item: I hope that at least one thing about the Switch 2 is weird.
Let me explain.
When announced in 2016, the Nintendo Switch inspired a lot of buzz. Nintendo fans could use a console to play on their television and bring it on the go! Not only that, but the beefed-up handheld could run larger games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Because of characteristics like these, the Nintendo Switch later became one of my favorite consoles of all time… but it’s also a bit boring.
It has a basic UI that only gives users the option to choose between black or white designs for the menus. The Switch had a little mascot named Amelia N., but her association with the console was short-lived. The most personality Nintendo has ever given us has been Joy-Cons with cute pastel color schemes. I appreciated it, but it wasn’t enough to make the console feel like it had the sense of character and whimsy I loved in previous Nintendo consoles.
As we look to the future, I hope the Switch 2 has at least one characteristic that makes it feel a bit less sanitized. I especially feel this way since some of the main Nintendo Switch competitors out there, like the Steam Deck or the Asus ROG Ally, are clunky monstrosities with all-black or all-white hardware.
This can be a wonky gimmick to the hardware or some other aspect of the software that’s unique to the console. Hell, give me one adorable jingle that plays at some point when using the console, and I could be satisfied. I just want to believe that Nintendo can still make something that is at least a little bit goofy.
