A fantastical creation birthed from the mind of author J.R.R. Tolkien in his masterful epic The Lord of the Rings, Hobbits are simple creatures with a knack for stealthiness. Made even more mainstream by Peter Jackson's big-screen adaptation in the early 2000s, they've become recognizable icons in pop culture. Tolkien held Hobbits in such high regard that he dedicated the opening chapters of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring to breaking down their own unique culture. Chapters that Jackson implemented further into the extended edition of the Lord of the Rings DVD release. However, Hobbits famously made their first appearance in Tolkien's adventurous novel The Hobbit, published in 1937.
