Horror films existed since the birth of moving pictures but didn't become a widely-recognized genre until the classic era of Universal Monsters launched Dracula and Frankenstein. Because these monsters were so popular and, more importantly, based mostly on public domain properties, there have been many remakes, reboots, and parodies over the years.
