Monster Hunter: Wilds is one of early 2025’s biggest games, and fans of the series are eager to jump in when it launches Feb. 28. But if you’re among those who haven’t played a Monster Hunter game before, and maybe aren’t sure if you want to pay $70 to pre-order Wilds, you might as well start with its 2018 predecessor to see if you’ll enjoy it. Monster Hunter: World is a great entry point in the franchise, and it’s $8.39 for Steam PC through Fanatical (normally $29.99). This title is verified to work well on the Steam Deck.

Monster Hunter: Wilds is cheap on PlayStation and Xbox, too, costing $9.99.

If you’re not a franchise veteran, you’d be forgiven for assuming that all Monster Hunter games are built similarly. There’s the classic, almost arcade-like, structure that helped the franchise skyrocket in popularity early on, which is still present in some modern games including Monster Hunter: Rise (available on Game Pass, by the way). However, more recently, Capcom has started pushing the series more in an adventure game direction, which is what you’ll find in World and Wilds.
