The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has denied he's returning in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man 4.
Garfield told IndieWire that he won't return as Spider-Man again despite him doing so in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside original on-screen Spidey Tobey Maguire and current iteration Tom Holland.
"The internet is a big place," Garfield said. "I think there’s a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I’m afraid."
That's not to say Garfield isn't duping fans himself though. The actor lied to all but three people about his return in No Way Home, so he could be doing so again. But it would perhaps soften the impact of that film if Marvel retread the exact same ground.
That didn't stop fans calling for more of Garfield's take on Peter Parker, of course, as Amazing Spider-Man 3 was trending online following No Way Home's release. And the actor has said he's up for returning too, but only "if it felt right."
Practically nothing is known about Spider-Man 4, and it's not even officially confirmed as of yet. Original Spider-Man director Sam Raimi similarly poured cold water on rumors he'd return for Spider-Man 4 alongside Maguire though.
Holland himself has said "the best in the business" are working on a story for Spider-Man 4 but it's still not guaranteed because he and Marvel "have a legacy to protect."
