The Golden Age was filled with costumed mystery men using themed gimmicks to fight crime. Batman paired a creature of the night theme with equipment, detective skills, and fighting abilities. His popularity skyrocketed. The success of Batman meant many other characters following in his footsteps but not surpassing him. Many publishers used the Batman formula for new heroes, and DC did it with Green Arrow.
