Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro confirms that a few years ago, he was going to direct a film set in a galaxy far, far away.

The news first appeared after Josh Horowitz interviewed writer David Goyer, known for his works on the likes of The Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. During the interview, Goyer confirmed he wrote an "unproduced Star Wars film" and that del Toro was attached to the project as its director. Goyer mentions the project was in the works about four years ago and then confirmed he wrote a script for another unproduced Star Wars film focusing on the origins of the Jedi.

Horowitz posted a clip of his interview on the social media website X (formerly Twitter) and tagged del Toro, with the filmmaker confirming in a quote post that that was indeed the truth. While del Toro did not say much about the film, he does hint that it would have focused on the notorious crime lord Jabba the Hutt. "True. Can't say much," del Toro wrote. "Maybe two letters 'J' and 'BB' is that three letters?"

As early as 2017, there were reports that Lucasfilm was developing a film focused on Jabba the Hutt, but the news was seldom since Variety first broke the story all those years ago.

Of course, it would not be the first time a Star Wars film didn't come to fruition, including a reported movie from Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige (although Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy insisted in an interview with IGN it was never in the works), a Rogue Squadron film with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins (which Kennedy says could still happen as a movie or TV show), a trilogy of films from the Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

IGN talked with Kennedy about a number of projects that haven't made it to screen at Star Wars Celebration in April, where she insisted many projects haven't been officially shelved.

"Development is a complicated long-term process," she said at the time. "Some people, we're dealing with scheduling because obviously really talented people are working. So it's often not a shelving, it's just, is it ready? That's really what it comes down to.

So, who knows? Maybe we'll eventually get that del Toro/Jabba the Hutt Star Wars movie. If you want to learn more about the upcoming Star Wars movies and TV Shows currently in the works, check out our roundup.
