Helldivers 2 players are alarmed by a new spacetime meter on the map

A big part of playing Helldivers 2 is checking the galaxy map aboard your Super Destroyer ship in order to get new missions from Super Earth and check out the current Major Order. At first, everything seemed pretty typical as I checked up on the latest developments — command is sending the Helldivers to wipe out the Automaton’s Jet Brigade, a metal menace. But the “Spacetime Fluctuation Indicator” on the screen is new, and I’m very alarmed.

The Spacetime Flunctuation Indicator first appeared on Wednesday, after players fought back the Terminids for their sweet Element 710, which is essentially space oil. I immediately went to Meridia, the Supercolony that Helldivers turned into a black hole back in June 2024. Super Destroyer messages had recently informed players that the black hole was, in fact, a worm hole — could that be related to these fluctuations? But Meridia seems to be the same, eerie void as ever.

On Thursday, players received their new marching orders against the Automatons, and I couldn’t help but notice that not only is the Spacetime Fluctuation Indicator back, but it appears to be glowing. Is that… is that good? I’m a simple, humble Helldiver, but I’m quite alarmed.

Smart money suggests that these readings are related to the mysterious Illuminate, who re-appeared after a century of exile in Dec. 2024. The Meridia operation, while extremely effective at stopping the spread of those nasty little Terminids, appears to have been a Pandora’s Box: First you rip open a wormhole in reality, the next thing you know, you’re dealing with all sorts of scientific ramifications. I’m eagerly awaiting an explanation on these fluctuations, but I suspect it’s nothing good. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer my spacetime to be stable, thank you.
