Despite having finished filming on the project, Netflix won't be releasing Halle Berry sci-fi movie The Mothership, IGN has learned.
Reporter Jeff Sneider first broke the news on Tuesday, which IGN has confirmed with Netflix. According to the studio, which notes that the "these kinds of decisions are never easy and not taken lightly," The Mothership was in the midst of a lengthy post-production, faced with numerous delays, and "couldn't be completed."
It now likely won't see the light of day. Berry's relationship with Netflix, however, continues, and she'll next appear in action film The Union for the streamer. Netflix last released her directorial debut Bruised.
"Netflix remains committed to genre storytelling and will continue to take big swings and bold bets in this space," the studio said in a statement. "We have an exciting current slate of sci-fi, genre and thriller films, including Fair Play (which we acquired from MRC), The Killer, Leave the World Behind and Rebel Moon. Sci-fi, genre and thriller films like The Adam Project, Bird Box and The Mother are among our most popular films."
The Mothership was first revealed in February 2021, with Deadline reporting that Oscar-nominated Bridges of Spies screenwriter Matthew Charman wrote the script and would be making his directorial debut. According to the logline, The Mothership"follows Sara Morse (Berry) one year since her husband mysteriously vanished from their rural farm. When she discovers a strange, extraterrestrial object underneath their home, Sara and her kids embark on a race to find their husband, father, and most importantly – the truth."
