The nature of video games as methods to live out escapist fantasies has been obvious for a long time. To help with the escapism, games often use silent protagonists to make it easier for the player to project themselves onto the hero. As technology has developed, however, so has the capability for storytelling in gaming. As game plots have become more and more complex, some would argue that, at least in story-based games, keeping the player character from speaking hurts the plot by, ironically, employing a "tell, don't show" approach regarding their abilities, how other characters see them and more.
