Long-awaited disaster follow-up, Twisters, finally touched ground with a first-look trailer during a Super Bowl LVIII commercial break today.
First footage of this shocking revival reveals a tornado movie that carries the spirit of the original '90s picture but with its own, elevated twists. Twisters' cyclones look meaner and more destructive here, as we see the film's storm-chasing leads dodging destroyed windmills and flying powerlines. The footage doesn't reveal too much about the film's story, but you can see the film's first trailer below.
Twister premiered in 1996 and stars Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton as Jo and Bill Harding, respectively. Their journey as storm chasers sees them coming face-to-face with fleets of tornadoes in Oklahoma as they attempt to better understand and deal with Mother Nature. It’s a classic disaster movie that managed to deliver both grounded thrills and fun characters, and Twisters is here to try and recapture the magic.
First information on the follow-up arrived with rumors in 2020, which stated that Universal was eyeing Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinksi. When talks with Kosinksi fell through, Twisters went on to pick up Minari and The Mandalorian director Lee Isaac Chung instead, with Where the Crawdads Sing star Daisy Edgar-Jones later added to the cast as well. Other faces—such as Top Gun: Maverick’s Glen Powell and Hamilton’s Anthony Ramos—are also set to appear in the film.
Twisters is expected to drop into the theaters on July 19, 2024.
