SpongeBob SquarePants antagonist Plankton is finally claiming the spotlight with his own Netflix movie, which will debut in 2025.
Netflix dropped a first-look image at Plankton: The Movie on X/Twitter, which puts the power-hungry proprietor of Bikini Bottom's Chum Bucket in charge of a controller with a big red button. The Earth looms ominously in the background while Plankton grins mischievously alongside his playful pet Spot.
The streamer announced the development of the Plankton-centric movie as part of its Next on Netflix press drop. According to Deadline, the animated feature will see the cunning copepod have his life "flipped upside down" when his plans to take over the world collapse, like many of his other evil efforts in the past.
Mr. Lawrence will reprise the role of Plankton for the new movie alongside Jill Talley, who voices Karen, the waterproof supercomputer who doubles as Plankton's wife and sidekick. Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Clancy Brown, and Rodger Bumpass will also bring their vocal talents to the SpongeBob spin-off.
Dave Needham is directing the movie, which has reportedly been in the works for over four years and features original songs. The story is set in the SpongeBob universe and hails from Mr. Lawrence, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kaz and Chris Viscardi. Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller serve as executive producers.
Those with a SquarePants-shaped hole in their lives will recall Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie is premiering on Netflix on August 2. This film follows SpongeBob and Sandy as they journey from their home at Bikini Bottom to Texas to save their town from a villainous plot (as shown in the first-look image).
