Before the introduction of the Akatsuki, Orochimaru was believed to be the main villain in Naruto. Though he wasn't the overarching villain, he never entirely went away after hijacking the Chunin Exams. In the end, his goal was to achieve immortality and master every Ninjutsu in existence. Eventually, this serpentine foe became one of the Hidden Leaf Village's most important allies.
