In 1989, Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert wrote an opinion piece called Why Adventure Games Suck where he listed his personal pet peeves with a genre he genuinely enjoyed. Much of his ire was reserved for trial-and-error puzzles that required players to die in order to discover the solution. His philosophy was that "danger should be survivable if the player is clever."
