When audiences think of dystopian narratives, a story with a fast-paced, action-packed, and gritty worst-case scenario might come to mind. That's just implied by the definition of dystopia, after all. As a result, the genre is chocked full of excellent examples that illustrate society at its lowest point while highlighting the most atrocious aspects of humanity, particularly in post-apocalyptic conditions. However, that's arguably why fans who love media of this nature flock to it. Perhaps it speaks to the darker impulses most people try to keep under wraps, so it acts as a cathartic vent. On the other hand, maybe it just comes down to good old-fashioned escapism, especially since the idea of a lawless world where the rules no longer apply can be intriguing because of its sense of freedom.
