Ever since Darth Maul unveiled his double-bladed lightsaber in The Phantom Menace, new and unusual types of lightsaber have been featured throughout the Star Wars franchise. These include the shorter 'shoto' sabers used by Yoda and Ahsoka, crossguard lightsabers, and the double-bladed spinning lightsabers issued to Imperial Inquisitors. The introduction of a new lightsaber to Star Wars canon usually means that it will begin to appear in various places. Kylo Ren's first use of a crossguard lightsaber, for example, prompts other material to establish that the crossguard hilt is an ancient design used by Jedi during the High Republic Era. However, one type of lightsaber seems to be genuinely one-of-a-kind: the lightsaber-blaster hybrid constructed by Ezra Bridger as his first Jedi weapon.
