2023 was a grim year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as its bevvy of projects either failed to take hold or remained passing successes at best. The few bright spots -- Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 and the second season of Loki -- were eclipsed by underwhelming by-the-numbers projects that made superhero fatigue more acute than ever. While the pop culture juggernaut isn't going anywhere anytime soon, 2024 looks to take a badly needed pause, with only one feature film and a scattering of streaming series holding the line. Fans can argue about the veracity of the decision. A little break could be just what the franchise needs, though it puts all the more pressure on 2025's slate of projects accordingly, and could slow momentum considerably if it isn't handled properly.
