Max has canceled David Jenkins’ pirate comedy series Our Flag Means Death after only two seasons.

The show’s creator confirmed the news on Instagram, sharing a heartfelt statement as the project comes to an end. He’s proud of the work done with the rest of the crew, which includes Taika Waititi, who served as executive producer and an actor on the show, as well as other actors, such as Rhys Darby, Joel Fry, Samson Kayo, and Matthew Maher.

“The bad news is clear,” Jenkins wrote. “OUR FLAG won’t be returning for a third season. We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this journey come to a premature end. Casey Bloys, Sarah Aubrey, Suzanna Makkos, Billy Wee, and David Ruby have been incredible champions of this show. They allowed us to make something authentically weird and heartfelt, cheering us on the entire way.”

Our Flag Means Death premiered in 2022 and wrapped up a second season late last year. It’s a premature sinking for a show that was primed to tell more heartwarming tales with swashbuckling settings.

The bad news is clear. OUR FLAG won’t be returning for a third season.

A spokesperson for Max provided a statement to The Hollywood Reporter:

“While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life. We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show.”

We took the time to reflect on Our Flag Means Death Season 2’s conclusion now that we know Season 3 will never set sail. In our review for the show’s latest and last season, we praised its charming actors and authentic romantic chemistry, saying, “Even with a less purposeful narrative this season, Flag’s characters and a clever remix of pirate tropes continue to make this a singular watch.”
