Futurama is chock-full of scene-stealing supporting figures, from Carol "Mom" Miller to Morbo the Annihilator. Zapp Brannigan, however, is in a class by himself as a buffoonish military captain convinced of his own infallibility and routinely failing upward though disaster after disaster. His preening arrogance is one of the show's most reliable source of gags, and because he's a supporting figure (if a major one), the writers only bring him onboard when they have something terrific for him to do. Of course, this also raises the question of who or what inspired Zapp Brannigan's character.
