The game was a surprise hit, exceeding sales by nearly 18% of what they originally budgeted for by the end of the year and then going on to sell over 9 million copies throughout the decade that followed. Since then, it has influenced some of gaming's most memorable titles, including Halo and Bioshock, and even more recent multiplayer titles like Valorant and Overwatch. Now, 25 years later, Valve has made Half-Life free for a limited time and provided a 25th Anniversary Update to the game that includes updates to graphics, widescreen field of view, and controller and Steam Deck support.
