Star Trek: Prodigy has been saved, with its second season heading to Netflix.

The show had previously been canceled by Paramount, with plans to remove the show from its streaming service, Paramount+ and reversing its second-season renewal. But now it's headed to Netflix, and its first season will also come to Netflix later this year.

Star Trek: Prodigy tells the story of a group of young aliens who find the USS Protostar – an abandoned Starfleet ship. Forced to learn to work together as they wrestle with manning a starship, the crew finds themselves on a course out of the Delta Quadrant under the tutelage of an Emergency Training Hologram – none other than Captain Janeway.

The decision to cancel the series was widely bemoaned by fans, spawning a campaign to save Star Trek: Prodigy. A banner to “Save Star Trek Prodigy” was even flown over Netflix’s Los Angeles offices on Sunset Boulevard. It looks as though those 10 minutes circling overhead may have been enough to convince Netflix execs to take a punt on the animated Star Trek show.

"Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Produgy fans, who championed not just a show, but a community that's always connected by the belief that we build a better future together," said co-showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman, as well as executive producer Alex Kurtzman in a joint statement. "We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can't wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world."

IGN’s Star Trek Prodigy Season 1 review gave it 7/10 and said: “Star Trek: Prodigy benefits greatly from Kate Mulgrew’s return as Hologram Kathryn Janeway as the mentor and voice of reason on USS Protostar. Her assured purr of wisdom adds heft to the show’s premise and is the perfect conduit to teach younger generations about Gene Roddenberry’s ethos about inclusivity and inspired curiosity for what’s out amongst the stars.”
