In the world of horror movies, there are often two factors that create an effective scare. The first is a good setup as tone and ambiance play a huge role. In the case of The Strangers, the isolation surrounding the main couple establishes a sense of unease that grows once the home invaders find their way in. The second factor that makes an effective scare comes in a well-placed jump scare. While it's easy to pinpoint one, it's much harder to find a great one.
