Attendees of the "Jim Lee & Friends" panel at SDCC were given a special surprise when none other than DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn showed up to reveal the first footage of the upcoming animated series Creature Commandos.
Fortunately, Gunn quickly took to Twitter to post the new teaser as well.
The teaser shows Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. arriving at Belle Reve Prison and meeting with Viola Davis' Amanda Waller at the Non-Human Internment Division. Flag notes that the government shut down Waller's Task Force X and barred her from using human prisoners. Waller retorts "These assh***s aren't human."
The footage shows off The Bride, Dr. Phosphorous, Weasel, GI Robot, Nina Mazursky, and Frankenstein. G.I. Robot says, "It’s been oh so long since GI Robot sent Nazis back to hell.”
Panel moderator Jim Lee praised Gunn's ability to bring obscure and outlandish characters from the fringes to the mainstream, citing Guardians of the Galaxy's Rocket Raccoon as a perfect example. Lee said he's very excited to see Gunn bring that energy to the DCU.
Lee also related an anecdote about visiting the Superman movie set and how Gunn took time out his busy work day to sit with the assembled comic book creators and geek out over their shared love of comic books.
Gunn then hit fans with an Apple-style "just one more thing," revealing the brand new DC Studios logo to the crowd.
Creature Commandos is a seven-episode animated series debuting on Max in December 2024. It also happens to be the very first project set in Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted DCU. Creature Commandos features the voices of Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
