Mecha anime has evolved a lot throughout the decades, but the genre was inarguably defined by extravagant Super Robot shows in its earliest years. A well-known example of this was the Mazinger series, with the titular mech being one of the most recognizable giant robots ever. The series gave rise to one entry that arguably eclipsed its predecessor in popularity, however.
