In a world where binging your favorite TV shows is nothing out of the ordinary, Netflix has released a new report detailing the most popular shows and movies and how many hours subscribers spent indulging in the streaming giant's massive library of content.
In a new press release, Netflix announced that it plans to publish What We Watched: A Netlfix Engagement Report twice a year, described as "a comprehensive report" of the shows and movies subscribers watched over six months, including if that title was available globally, the premiere date for the TV show or movie, and how many hours spent watching original or licensed content.
In the first report, Netflix revealed that the show with the most hours viewed was the first season of The Night Agent, with over 812 million hours viewed globally. Some other noteworthy stats from content in the Top 10 category include Wednesday Season 1 with 507.7 million viewing hours, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and the fourth season of You, which had over 440 million hours viewed.
It is important to remember that this report only includes shows and hours viewed between January 2023 and June 2023. So content such as Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Squid Game: The Challenge were not included as these shows were released later in the year.
"This is a big step forward for Netflix and our industry," Netflix wrote in the press release. "We believe the viewing information in this report — combined with our weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists — will give creators and our industry deeper insights into our audiences and what resonates with them."
The announcement of the What We Watched engagement report is a lot more detailed in just how many hours subscribers are sinking into some of the most popular shows.
The announcement of the What We Watched report comes a few months after the Writer's Guild of America ratified its new contract with Hollywood's studios. Under this new contract, it addresses things, including data transparency for streaming services.
