Miramax has received the TV rights to the Halloween franchise. It is currently controlled by Trancas International Films and run by Malek Akkad.
According to Deadline, the deal between Miramax and Trancas includes a Halloween TV series, as well as a first-look agreement for other TV projects for international markets. The Halloween series could have its own cinematic universe that has both film and TV. Marc Helwig, the head of global TV at Miramax will be working with Akkad to oversee the Halloween franchise.
“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Halloween to television,” Helwig said in a statement. “We are thrilled to expand our long and successful partnership with Trancas and the brilliant Malek Akkad in introducing this iconic franchise to a new form of storytelling and a new generation of fans.”
Akkad added, “Trancas International Films is extremely enthused to be expanding our long-standing relationship with Miramax, and we look forward to working with Marc Helwig and the entire team in creating this new chapter.”
This looks to be the latest attempt to turn a beloved horror franchise into a TV series, following on from Chucky on USA. Turning it into a cinematic universe would be a bold step, but Miramax certainly has plenty of material to draw from the franchise's 45 year history.
The Halloween franchise spans 13 films, including the original in 1978. In 2018, a Halloween trilogy was created that focuses on Laurie Strode, the former babysitter of protagonist Michael Myers. The second film in the trilogy, Halloween Kills, was released in 2021 and the final film, Halloween Ends, was released last October.
