In Season 3 of Smallville, Ian Somerhalder had a six-episode recurring role as Adam Knight. His mysterious character had a complicated relationship with Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), ultimately resulting in his death. After Lana was trampled by her horse, she underwent physical therapy. Adam pushed her to start walking faster, and they became close friends. He developed feelings for her, but as time passed, the audience soon realized his true intentions. Strangely enough, his character was linked to Batman before his death. His name, a combination of Adam West and Batman's common nickname, the Dark Knight, along with his background that included deceased parents and martial arts training, led many to speculate that he was a version of Bruce Wayne.
