While not the first slasher, John Carpenter's masterpiece, Halloween, ushered in the golden age of carnage that would dominate horror cinema through the 1980s. Just like Grunge music or reality TV, the initial appeal wore off, and the genre grew stale, but there has been a resurgence of fresh, innovative slasher films.
