Agatha: Coven of Chaos has found another powerful sorceress in Saturday Night Live alum Sasheer Zamata, who plays Jennifer Kale in Marvel Studios' upcoming WandaVision spin-off.
In an interview with Mashable before the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) went on strike, Zamata revealed she would be making her MCU debut as Jennifer Kale in the Disney+ series, starring alongside Kathryn Hahn's titular witch and her wickedly cacklesome coven.
"I definitely did do as much [comic book] research as I could," Zamata said of her preparations for the role. "But the way we formed this character is very different from what I think people expect."
She added: "[Shooting the show] was so magical and ethereal. It brought that out of everyone on set. There were crystals and candles everywhere. We saged and cleansed the stage all the time. It was the perfect environment for me."
Zamata is perhaps best known for her tenure as a cast member on NBC's late-night comedy series Saturday Night Live, plus her stand-up performances at various festivals over the years. However, she also attracted attention for her leading role on the Hulu series Woke, as well as the ABC sitcom Home Economics.
The character of Jennifer Kale was created by Steve Gerber and Rich Buckler in 1972, and started out in the horror-fantasy comic series Man-Thing before moving into other popular titles. She has teamed up with several magic-wielding characters, including Doctor Strange, and is also the cousin of Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch.
In addition to Zamata and Hahn, Agatha: Coven of Chaos will reportedly star Joe Locke as an older version of Wanda's son Wiccan, Aubrey Plaza as a mystery villain, and Patti LuPone as "450-year-old Sicilian witch" Lilia Calderu, who also has connections to Doctor Strange. Elizabeth Olsen expects to make a return as well.
Agatha: Coven of Chaos has yet to set a release date, and little else about it is known, other than it featuring musical numbers courtesy of WandaVision songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez — the same duo behind WandaVision's catchy sitcom themes, including the epic Emmy-winning earworm Agatha All Along.
