Star Trek: Discovery pulls off an extraordinary balancing act for its first two seasons by telling a new story just a few years before the events of The Original Series and flirting with serious continuity errors in the process. It gets stung on that front once or twice (like when its new version of the Klingons did not go over well with fans), but for the most part, it succeeds extraordinarily well in avoiding significant missteps. Most impressively, its protagonist Michael Burnham is a previously unknown adopted sister of Mr. Spock -- arguably the most storied character in the entire franchise -- and yet the show makes their connection work extraordinarily well.
