We’re still a month out from the Assassin’s Creed Shadows launch on March 20, but an X user by the name of Danny Stevens has spent the last day or so sharing impressions, images, and gameplay clips from a physical PlayStation 5 copy of the game that they were somehow able to acquire online.
The original X account is currently locked down, but members of the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit were able to archive Stevens’ uploads in two separate Imgur albums for photos and videos. One picture appears to indicate that Stevens purchased this copy of Assassin’s Creed Shadows through an unidentified online marketplace, while another shows the game installing via a notification on the PS5 dashboard. The videos mostly show Stevens navigating the Shadows menus and trying on different clothing, but one shows the game booting up, while another demonstrates some combat with shinobi protagonist Naoe.
Many commenters on the Reddit post believe this to be an old build of the game, perhaps even from before its most recent delay, due to Stevens’ inability to redeem the Limited Edition costume codes.
A few interesting tidbits posted by Stevens before they locked down their X account include the opinion that Assassin’s Creed Shadows feels like “Ghost of Tsushima with better stealth” and notes about the varying quality of motion capture in the game’s copious cutscenes. Shadows apparently made them feel nostalgic for previous Assassin’s Creed games, specifically 2011’s Revelations. Stevens also said that the game doesn’t shy away from African protagonist Yasuke’s novelty to the Japanese people of the time period, as other characters continually refer to him as “Black man.”
Polygon has reached out to Ubisoft for comment on the situation but did not hear back immediately.
