At first glance, the summer's pop-culture queen Barbie has very little in common with David Fincher's Fight Club, the still-controversial adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel about a wage slave who slowly loses his mind. The former is a candy-colored social satire wrapped up in the ubiquitous children's doll. The latter is an apocalyptic meditation on the cost of toxic masculinity. Yet, the two are bound by a common target: a patriarchal consumer culture and the way it destroys people's identity.
