This morning’s Mario Kart World Nintendo Direct showcased new character outfits, courses, and items, but it also showed off two new things players can do during races: charge jump and rewind.
To charge jump, players will need to hold down the drift buttons on straight paths. After releasing the button, you can jump in the air, leaping high enough to jump over cars and other obstacles. Your character does appear to do a trick and get a short speed boost after landing, too, so this will be crucial to get ahead. You can also use this to dodge incoming attacks, so you’ll definitely want to master the jump.
When playing in free roam or solo races, you’ll be able to rewind, literally rewinding the position of your kart. While not super useful for actual race progression, this can help you master tricky jumps to shortcuts and the like. Though when you do rewind, it’s not rewinding your competition — just you, so you’ll need to beware that you’ll likely lose your spot in the lead if you rewind too much.

With such a large focus on the “open world” of Mario Kart World, it’s no surprise that Nintendo is introducing new ways to get around and learn different tricks. It does seem like this Mario Kart will really test your course knowledge and skill as you play against more advanced players.
Mario Kart World launches on June 5, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.
